The Challenges We Don't Share: Real Life on a Boat

Some things just don't get shared on social media. These are the less glamorous moments of life on a boat, the parts that might stir up controversy or questions we don't always feel like answering.

Life on a boat comes with little privacy and external help; it's simple and peaceful but also intense and full of strong emotions. This post is dedicated to acknowledging those less pleasant emotions:

😱 There's a real fear—the kind that shakes your knees when a storm hits, and the wind picks up, or when you have to re-anchor in the middle of the night because the current shifted.

😰 There's anxiety whispering in your ear with every creak of the boat, making you wonder what's going to break next.

🤢 There's shock when you realize there’s a toilet full of $hit that is not draining and disgust when you remember you're the responsible adult.

😩 There's helplessness when you've run out of space to store trash after two months in the Bahamas and guilt when you realize you have to burn some of it like the locals do.

😩 There's frustration when one of the kids throws a learning tantrum, and the day is clearly over.

🤕 There's a constant worry when you hear a thud and rush to see which child is hurt while the worst scenarios run through your mind.

😔 There's guilt about the things we can't provide or do

😠 And anger over silly things.

😳 And I can’t talk about emotions without mentioning the embarrassment when you realize everyone hears and smells everything.

While not everything is shared on social media, we don't ignore these feelings.

We acknowledge them and choose to turn each experience into an adventure story or a private joke. We focus on the positive emotions and build a family resilience that can handle whatever life throws at us.
