I've read many posts and comments from people who don't know how to become a digital nomad, and I wanted to share my insights on the process as one who came from the startup world, where I had to be at the office all the time physically, and slowly made the transformation to remote and digital nomad.
I won't tell you what you can do as a digital nomad; there are more experienced and wiser people than me for that. However, I will offer practical advice on how to see if it fits you and how to move towards
But first, I have to say two things: (a) I don't think a nomadic lifestyle is for everyone. Some people are better off taking time off and going out traveling instead. And (2) being self-employed is not for everyone either. You get a lot of uncertainty about income alongside the freedom.
As promised, my practical tips:
❓Is digital nomad life right for me?
Can you balance work and life without the structure of morning work and kids in institutions? It might not be for you if the thought of working evenings or weekends with constant childcare responsibilities doesn't appeal to you.
❓Can I freelance in my profession?
During our journey, we met people with various occupations who managed to generate income from things we never even thought of. So, even if you feel your profession isn't suitable for a digital nomad lifestyle, search for inspiration on Google, Instagram, and TikTok. You might be surprised about your profession or your skills/hobbies.
❓Can I work remotely at my current job?
Have a life-work balance conversation with your manager with a clear goal to allow you to work "normal" hours from home. Then, slowly push it to non-conservative hours and days that work better for you. Don't be afraid to test the limits; you'll get a "no" in the worst case.
❓Will my workplace accept me as a digital nomad?
You have to try if you want to get an answer, so don't hide your plans. Planning for the future says nothing about your current work quality. After proving it is possible to work remotely, discuss it with your manager and see what she says.
